A You should be able to reach 1-800-COLLECT from any non-prison phone in the U.S. (for prison phones, collect calling access varies; check with the specific prison facility). After you dial 1-800-COLLECT (1-800-265-5328), you should hear a “chime” followed by an automated voice saying “Thank you for calling 1-800-COLLECT. To make a collect call, enter the number you wish to call, area code first…” If you do not hear this message, you have not reached 1-800-COLLECT; please contact us and let us know the phone number from which you tried to reach 1-800-COLLECT, the date of the call, and what kind of phone you were calling from (residential phone, payphone, hospital phone, etc.) so that we may further research the issue. If you are able to reach 1-800-COLLECT, but after entering the phone number you wish to call, you hear a message stating that collect calls can not be completed to the number, there may be a block on the phone number. Please contact 1-800-306-9317 or your local phone company for more information.

Q Can I leave a message with 1-800-COLLECT?
A Yes! Whenever your call can not be connected right away, you will be offered the ability to send a collect message. Simply record a message up to four minutes in length, and 1-800-COLLECT will continue to call your party (up to 8 times) until we reach someone.  1-800-COLLECT attempts to deliver messages between the hours of 7 am and midnight in the receiver's time zone.  The receiver will be given the same opportunity to accept or deny the message as they do with collect calls.

Q Does 1-800-COLLECT have other ways to help me complete a call?
A Yes! 1-800-COLLECT offers two other payment methods to help get your call through:
  • Third party billing:
1-800-COLLECT calls can be charged to a different number than the one you are calling. It comes in handy when you are calling your brother or sister but would rather have your parents pay for the call. Your parents need to be home to accept the charges before the call can be placed.
  • Card billing:
1-800-COLLECT calls can be charged to a telephone calling card or credit card rather than charged to the receiver. We accept MCI cards, local phone company cards, American Express and Discover.
